Mathematics Curriculum Aim
At Forest Park Primary School, the teaching of Maths is underpinned by the belief that all children need a deep understanding of the mathematics they are learning. Mathematics teaches children how to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate, reason, make decisions to solve problems in a range of contexts and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. We encourage the children to develop these key and fundamental skills through a teaching for mastery approach. During lessons, pupils are given opportunities to become fluent mathematicians by developing their understanding by making links between different concepts of maths. There is one set of mathematical concepts for all and all pupils have access to these concepts and the rich connections between them. New mathematical concepts are introduced using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach; enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics, and allows them to have clear models and images to aid their understanding.
