Music
Music Curriculum Aim
‘Music has a power of forming the character and should therefore be introduced into the education of the young.’ (Aristotle)
‘Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, and life to everything… Without music, life would be an error.’ (Plato)
‘If children are not introduced to Music at an early age, I believe something fundamental is actually being taken away from them’ (Luciano Pavarotti)
At Forest Park, we recognise the importance of Music in the lives of all children. Music builds self-esteem and boosts wellbeing. It also encourages teamwork and a sense of unity, creating a cultural harmony within our school. As stated in the Department for Education's report, ‘The Importance of Music: A National Plan for Music Education’, ‘Most children will have their first experience of music at school. It is important that music education of high quality is available to as many of them as possible: it must not become the preserve of those children whose families can afford to pay for music tuition. While music touches the lives of all young people, the disadvantaged can benefit most. Music helps bind pupils into the wider life of the school. Schools cannot do everything alone: they need the support of a wider local music structure.’ With this in mind, we believe that it is the right of all children to have access to high quality Music provision on a weekly basis.
We constantly draw on the expertise of a specialist music teacher, as well as working closely with the City Music School and Music Hub. We understand the positive role Music plays in the wellbeing of our children and we endeavour to support the social and emotional development of our children in this way. We believe it is important that Music at Forest Park is representative of our diverse culture and is linked to our school Cultural Capital. We hope that all children will experience a breadth of Musical genres and experiences during their time with us.
